The Nigerian Dictionary of National Biography (NDNB) has obtained an extensive collection of historic parliamentary records from the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) as part of an ongoing effort to reconstruct and preserve the biographies of Nigerians who served in the country's legislatures during the pre-independence era, the First Republic and the Second Republic.
The documents, which were released following a request by the NDNB, include parliamentary Hansards and other legislative records containing information about the membership, proceedings and activities of Nigeria's early legislative institutions.
The records are being used to research and reconstruct the lives and parliamentary careers of hundreds of former legislators, many of whom have little or no biographical information available online. In many cases, their names have survived only in parliamentary membership lists, electoral returns, and other official records, with virtually nothing known about their personal backgrounds, careers, or later lives.
The NDNB research team is examining the parliamentary documents alongside historic yearbooks, government gazettes, electoral records, contemporary publications and digitised newspapers available through the National Library of Nigeria's digital repository and other archival sources.
By cross-referencing these materials, researchers identify constituencies represented by legislators, their political affiliations, parliamentary appointments, committee memberships, and contributions to debates, motions, questions, and legislative proceedings.
The project is particularly concerned with recovering the histories of lesser-known parliamentarians whose roles in Nigeria's political and legislative development have received little scholarly or public attention.
Although significant gaps remain in the personal histories of many of these individuals, including basic details such as their dates of birth, education, family backgrounds, and dates of death, the NDNB considers reconstructing their documented parliamentary activities an important contribution to preserving the country's institutional memory.
Through the initiative, legislators who have largely disappeared from public historical accounts are being reintroduced into Nigeria's biographical record, with their contributions to legislation, public policy and constituency representation documented for researchers, students and future generations.
The exercise also demonstrates the importance of parliamentary Hansards as sources of biographical history. Beyond preserving legislative debates, these records provide evidence of the activities, concerns and public positions of individuals whose lives might otherwise remain undocumented.
The General Editor of the NDNB expressed particular appreciation to Dr Abubakar Sanni Aliyu, Chief Librarian and Head of the ICT / Automation / E-Library Unit at NILDS, for facilitating the prompt release of the requested documents and supporting access to these important historical materials.
The General Editor also acknowledged the importance of institutions that preserve and make historical public records accessible, noting that such resources are indispensable to efforts to recover neglected aspects of Nigeria's history.
The NDNB is published by the Institute for Historical Studies, Biographical Research, Documentation and Legacy (IHS-BiRD & L) as a reference resource dedicated to documenting the lives and contributions of Nigerians across different periods, professions and fields of endeavour.
The ongoing parliamentary biography project is part of the Institute's broader effort to ensure that individuals who helped shape Nigeria's political and institutional development are not forgotten simply because detailed accounts of their lives were never written or preserved.
The biographies produced through the exercise are being incorporated into the NDNB and are available at www.ndnb.ng.
